Home Horde

An augmented-reality shooter where zombies come through your real doorways and bugs crawl out of your floor.

A zombie lunging out of a real living-room doorway in Home Horde

The challenge

Most AR games place objects on a flat surface in front of you. We wanted the player's own home to be the level: enemies should come from the room's real doors and floor, wherever the player happens to be.

What we built

  • A one-time room scan with on-device detection of doorways and open floor; one door or one floor portal is enough to start, and more join as you play.
  • Two kinds of enemies with their own entry points: zombies through real doors, and spiders, roach swarms and beetles through floor portals.
  • Thirteen weapons with upgrades, a boss every fifth wave, elite enemies from wave six, and the option to move to a bigger room every ten waves while keeping your progress.
  • Same-room co-op: a friend's phone syncs to your scanned room and you fight the same horde together.
  • Privacy by design: camera frames stay on the device.

Technology

  • Unity
  • ARKit
  • On-device detection
  • Local co-op

The result

A free game for iPhone and iPad with no in-app purchases, coming soon to the App Store.
